The club’s summer camp this year was combined with a British Canoeing FSRT course, which stands for Foundation Safety and Rescue Training.
The majority, 7 of us to be precise, camped at Park Farm in Dereham but there was an Airbnb and a luxury guest house in the mix.
The course on Saturday was run by two coaches from the Dereham Canoe Club, Jeff Toser and Lynda Turner. The morning was spent in the classroom before we moved on to learning about various methods of towing, including how to get throw lines caught in a tree. That may not have been the goal but I proved to be good at it.
After lunch we got on the water to practice various methods and combinations of boat rescue; Kayakers and Canoeists rescuing each other, SUP Boarders rescuing other boarders and so on. This meant getting wet and that taught us that the River Wensum is a good deal colder than the Crouch. I also know now that if I ever see Helen waving frantically in the water when I'm out paddling, then I’d best pretend I haven't seen her unless I fancy a swim. At least I think that was the learning objective of that particular exercise.
In all seriousness, the course was excellent. It provides some great strategies for dealing with emergency situations because they won't be obvious to you when the time comes. In addition to not rushing to within reach of a panicking swimmer, there is also the principle that when someone in your paddling group gets into trouble, at that point your highest priority is yourself, then the group and then the person in trouble. That initially seemed counter-intuitive.
On Sunday we joined a few other kayakers from the Dereham Canoe Group for a very picturesque 13km paddle along the River Yare, stopping for a pub lunch before returning.
Heartfelt thanks go to:
- Jeff, Lynda and Helen for running the FSRT course and the Dereham Canoe Group for their hospitality.
- Carrick Castle Farm for hosting us in their grounds.
- Kelly at Broadland Paddle sport for allowing us to use her club’s facilities.
- Adrian Archer for risking injury being the swing ball ballast, oh and organising the weekend.
- The Ferry House at Surlingham for being so welcoming to 16 kayakers.
It was a great weekend, good weather, great company and educational and entertaining all at the same time. Roll on next year.
Finally, I’ll sign off with a warning, unless you are wearing orange and want to distract him, don’t mention “The Darby” in front of Adrian.
