WHY BECOME A SEA KAYAK COACH?

First of all, you will be joining a community of like minded individuals, keen to learn, develop and have fun whilst sharing their love of paddlesport. The Coach Award takes what you know and supports you through formal and informal development opportunities, part of your journey will involve an assessment, but the assessment isn’t the end as we believe in life long opportunities for learning.

The Coach Award is used by the self employed, clubs, centres and organisations as an appropriate level of training for coaches who develop individuals paddlesport knowledge and skills in a Sea environment.

WHAT CAN A SEA KAYAK COACH DO?.

You will coach in Sea Kayaks, Touring Kayaks and Sit on Tops in the Sea environment. This will include coaching beginners new to the sport, or paddlers looking to develop their skills.

As a Coach you can work independently or you could be deployed by a club, centre or organisation. Being a Coach allows you to design coaching to support their learners and provide British Canoeing Awards and Training such as:

  • Personal Performance Awards – for example the Start Award - Discover Award, Explore Award, and Sea Kayak Award


Note: other experience, training or qualifications may be required find out more in our Develop Skills section.

There will be opportunities to develop and progress your own paddling skills and meet like-minded people during the course. Many of our course candidates develop long lasting friendships, connections and contacts.

Coach Core Training

The Core Coach Training is open to all paddlers regardless your discipline or previous coaching experience.

During this course, you will explore different approaches to understanding and enabling learning. You will also be supported in evolving your personal coaching development plan to enable you to take your learning into practice after the course.

The training is available as a two day practical course or an online modular course.

For qualified coaches, this can form part of your continuous professional development and has a value of 20 CPD points.


OVERVIEW

During the training, you will explore subjects that will help you understand:

  • The learning journey of the paddlers you coach
  • How to coach learners with different needs
  • Structures for practice, to enable your learners to get the most from sessions on the water with you.

Around the main sessions you will also explore (with the support of your tutors):

  • Your role as a coach
  • Maximising your development through reflective practice and your personal development plan.

If your interested in progressing to one of the 22 discipline specific Coach Award qualifications your tutors will support the planning of your next steps.

To get the most out of your Core Coach Training, you need to feel comfortable in or on your craft and be able to independently paddle on sheltered water. We recommend you consider the Paddle Explore Award (or equivalent level of experience) before booking on your Core Coach Training.

Coach Award

The Coach Award is designed for people whose core function is to coach paddlers who want to gain/improve paddlesport skills within the discipline chosen.

As a coach you will be able to plan, deliver and review progressive sessions safely, effectively and independently.
