Organising a taster session in July is no mean feat. It is a busy month on the river and with people in general.
Slack water is the preferred time for the tasters while the river is at its most benign. So, after consulting the tide tables, the events calendar and the coaches’ availability Saturday the 10th July was the only really viable option. Once the date was set prospective members were booked in and there was no shortage of willing CKC members to help.
Once again, the weather was kind with virtually no wind to confound our newbie paddlers. Keeping within a set area to the West of the pontoon our newbies took to it like ducks to the water where they were chaperoned and instructed by experienced paddlers. Knowledge was shared on how to paddle straight and how to turn and stop. The newbies paddled in sausage shaped loops putting it all into practice while under the watchful eye of the rescue boat crewed by Jerry and Diane. Only one newbie went for a swim who was quickly and skilfully assisted back into his kayak by his chaperone Roger.
Well done to everyone who took part and made it such a brilliant taster session. I would especially like to thank Sam Bell and John Shingler, attending our last taster, and came along to talk to the newbies and share their experiences since joining CKC.
Also, I would like to welcome Ian Woodland aboard who joined before I had even got back home 😊.
