Well it has to be said no one enjoys taking a swim in the Crouch especially during the month of October. But with all the interruptions this year, it feels like the season is sadly coming to an end before it really got started.
Keen to tidy up a few loose ends we thought we would see the season out with some training....…..actually it was me who thought it would be a good idea and you crazy lot all agreed!
11 brave souls turned up for the session, bright skies always a good start. Gathered on the pontoon poised for our launch Adrian gave a run down on some essential safety kit for paddlers. Whistle on a cord, if you don’t have one I would advise you purchase before our next session you will be asked! Throw tow, beautifully demonstrated by Wendy more on that in a moment. Bilge pump which for all those who took a swim was defiantly needed!
Demonstrations on land included wet exit the T Rescue and boat and paddler rescue.
On the pontoon Wendy was presented with the throw tow whilst Adrian threw himself in the water, I must add at this point it was a gushing tide and with Adrian's screams of help and arms waving Wendy launched the rope, but alas it failed to go over Adrian’s head instead we watched as he drifted further away! mumbles of heading to the pub were quickly quashed as we never leave a paddler behind, thanks to Peter Evans who was already in the water our Adrian was brought safely back to the pontoon.
Practice continued on the water with further demonstrations on paddle techniques, it was then our turn to rescue or be rescued. With the unfazed Jo offering to wet exit first and Roger and Nigel working together with the rescue.
Everyone who participated and wanted to try wet exit or rescues did so.
Well done Jo Challis, John Holliday, Amanda, Martin, Jerry, Wendy and me!
Final head count and big smiles we headed back to the pontoon. Thanks to everyone who literally threw themselves into this event and to all our experienced paddlers that gave us the confidence to do so. Dee Thornton
