Who knew you could get sunburnt whilst wearing more layers than a woolly mammoth? At least we all learnt about treating burns…
On a breezy morning on the 22nd of April, six of us gathered for our first of two days learning activity based first aid so that we are always ready to spring into action if anyone needs help out on the water. The course was run by Helen Toser and specially adapted to cover a range of likely possibilities we may encounter as kayakers with a few exciting scenarios to test us on day two. To comply with the current regulations we couldn’t sit in a nice warm office and so completed both days chasing the sun around the car park.
The first day covered everything in the emergency first aid at work syllabus including what to pack in our first aid kits. Did you know that a first aider cannot give you any tablets or creams if you need them? Everyone should carry their own personal first aid kit with any medication or tablets they need and if it’s important let us know where it is at the start of each paddle so we can pass it to you if needed. At the end of the first day, we all agreed to bring more layers for day two.
Day two was jam-packed and covered CPR, AED’s, bandaging and much more. We were each given a sanitised practice Annie to perfect our COVID friendly CPR and AED techniques. To close our training we were each given a scenario that was set up out of sight and we would come round the corner and need to assess the scene with no prior knowledge and correctly treat Barry who gets into a lot of accidents! To make it more realistic there was fake blood and I got a severed finger. When Adrian walked round the corner Barry had got himself into a right pickle, crushed by a kayak with lacerations to both legs and his head. You will be pleased to hear we all passed and although you should never need us, we are ready if you do! Tim Evans
